Bill Verplank-Opening Keynote

I watched Bill Verplank’s speech video, as he said creativity is the core factor of interaction design. The main purpose of design is to care about people’s feelings and behaviors. With the continuous development of design and technology, we should pay more attention to producing satisfactory products when designing, not just the problem of craftsmanship.

The design task of an interaction designer is to connect people with the world. Three aspects should be considered when designing, one, how do you feel, that is, the sense of hearing, taste and vision. Two, how do you know, is how you think Three, how do you do, what is the method. These steps are very critical and important in interaction design.

People have different thinking modes. Bill Verplank mainly summarizes three thinking modes, enactive thinking, iconic thinking and symbolic thinking. Enactive thinking refers to’do’, that is to say some instincts that are born from birth; Iconic thinking is’see’, which refers to things that are recognized visually. For example, graphic designers often think and express themselves in this way; Symbolic thinking is also’know’, which refers to some way of thinking through language or intelligence. He explained in detail the difference between these three modes and the three modes can exist at the same time. For example, the two modes of Iconic thinking and Symbolic thinking can be displayed with graphs. Just like Alan Kay said “Doing with images make symbols.”

Interaction design must not only consider people’s needs, but also pay attention to their thinking habits. Designing through people’s different thinking habits will make people more comfortable and convenient. Although problems will continue to be discovered in user testing, as long as the problems are solved in time, the possibility of errors may be reduced when facing real users, thereby improving the user experience.
